What’s happening
Montclair faces a $12.6M shortfall from unpaid invoices in previous years and a projected $7M deficit for 2025–26.
The main drivers are poor accounting & fiscal practices and platforms, lack of standard controls, and sharply rising health care, transportation, and salary costs.
Without action, mid-year cuts hit classrooms in January
What’s on the ballot
Question 1:
Vote YES to a one-time tax assessment to pay off the $12.6M unpaid invoices
Question 2:
Vote YES to an increase in property taxes to make up the $7M gap this year and future years
Why it matters to all of us
A YES / YES vote is essential to triage the crisis, keep decisions local, avoid a state monitor, and protect our students.
In addition, lower school quality is a significant risk to property values.
